Many people have questions about massage therapy. Whether it be for your first time experience, or you frequently get massages, but are not familiar with our policies. Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions about massage services at Touch of Health. Simply click on the questions below and you will have the answer.
What should I expect during my first massage therapy session?
You should plan to arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for paperwork. Water is available. Your therapist will greet you and show you to the treatment room where you will discuss your health history and goals of the session. You therapist may analyze your posture to identify structural imbalances which will help design your session to best address your needs. Please let your therapist know if there are any areas that you would rather he/she avoid, such as your stomach or face.
Your therapist will leave the room and give you a few minutes to undress and lay comfortably on the table between the sheets. Please undress to your level of comfort. During the session you will be fully draped. You therapist will only uncover the area being worked on.
During the session please relax, breathe and allow your therapist to move your limbs without assistance. Your therapist will check in with you periodically for feedback on pressure and general comfort. Feel free to speak up if the pressure is too light or too deep, if the room or table is too warm or too cold or if the music is too loud. Our work is most effective when you are comfortable and relaxed. When the session is over, your therapist will leave the room so you can get dressed. Take note to any changes in your body and just let everything sink in. When you are ready come to the reception area and enjoy some water before checking out.
Can I talk during my session?
Yes. It is important to let your therapist know if the pressure is too light or too deep. Otherwise massage is your time to relax and focus on your breathing.
How will I feel after my massage session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience relief of long term aches and pains. After the initial period of feeling slowed down, clients experience increased energy and greater productivity which can last for days. Toxins are released from you soft tissues during a massage so it is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage.
How often should I get a massage?
Regular massage can lead to long lasting changes. Depending on your schedule, budget and your needs, you may choose to schedule every week, once every two weeks or once a month. Once a month provides maintenance, while more frequent visits create more long term changes. More frequent visits are recommended initially for acute issues such as an injury due to an automobile or work related accident.
Do you treat medical conditions or injuries? If so, is insurance accepted?
Yes. All of our massage therapists are licensed and nationally certified which allows us to work on medically diagnosed conditions. A doctor’s prescription is required. We can bill all auto and workers’ compensation insurance companies. If you have out of network benefits with Aetna or United Healthcare massage therapy may be a covered service. You can also use your flexible spending account to pay for your massage.
I can’t make it to my appointment. Is there a cancellation fee?
We require a 24 hour cancellation notice to be given if you cannot make your appointment. If you cancel within 24 hours or no show for your appointment you will be charged $25. Voicemail is accessible 24 hours a day at (302) 229-1986. Please call as soon as you know you have an appointment conflict.
When should I not get a massage?
There are certain conditions that are contraindications for massage. These include fever, any type of infectious disease, severe cold, severe sunburn, blood clot, high blood pressure (unless it is controlled with medication), and open skin lesions or sores.
Do I have to be completely undressed?
No. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
How will a massage feel?
It usually depends on the techniques being used. Swedish massage is generally a lighter touch that uses long strokes. Deep tissue and sports massage use a firm pressure. Some spots may be tender. It is important to let your therapist know if the pressure is too much. Medical massage addresses specific issues which may cause some short term soreness in order to get long term relief.
Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes. All sessions are by appointment only. Please call (302) 235-7676 or click here.
How long will the massage session last?
A typical full body massage session lasts 60 minutes. A 90 minute massage is often scheduled when there are multiple trouble spots that need to be addressed during a session. A 30 minute session only allows for certain areas to be worked on such as the neck, back and shoulders or legs and feet. If you have a doctor’s prescription your session will last between 30 and 60 minutes.
